Sitar & Tabla

April 20 (Sun) 12:00~ @Tatami Space
Enjoy the mesmerizing melodies and rhythms created by two traditional Indian instruments.

<About the Artists>
Masatoshi Tsujii
Began studying sitar in 2013 under Indian classical musician Jin Nakamura. In 2015, he traveled to India to continue his studies under sitar maestro Shri Subrata De in New Delhi, training intensively while living in his teacher’s home.
The sitar is a string instrument representing North Indian classical music, featuring around 20 strings. Its unique layered sound is created by a combination of main and sympathetic strings, a gourd resonator, and a teakwood neck. It’s played using a metal pick worn on the index finger.
Atsushi Irmakawa
Began studying tabla in 2005 under tabla artist Shigeru Moriyama. While at university, he also created electroacoustic music fusing programming and tabla. He is currently active as a tabla performer.
The tabla is a pair of drums from India—one small and wooden, the other large and made of metal—with goat skin drumheads. Tension is adjusted with leather straps, and pitch can be changed using blocks called “gatta.”

<About the Artists>
Eriko Mizukawa
While studying at university, they discovered Irish music and began playing the uilleann pipes. After gaining performance experience in Japan, they enrolled at the University of Limerick in Ireland in September 2019 to study traditional music from various perspectives, including its history, current trends, and performance. They are currently active in live performances and sessions, mainly in the Tokyo area.
The Uilleann Pipes are Ireland’s traditional bagpipes. They produce a warm, nostalgic sound full of emotion. They are unique in being operated by bellows strapped to the elbow instead of being blown by mouth.
Chiaki Umeda
Trained in classical music, she studied traditional music of Ireland and Sweden in each respective country. She collaborates with musicians around the world and explores the expressive range of the Irish Harp. She also participates in music recording for dramas, anime, and video games.
The Irish Harp is a national symbol of Ireland. Historically played by singing bards with small harps strung with metal, modern versions use nylon or gut strings and are equipped with levers for semitone adjustments.
